Part 3: First visit to Essaouira

The next morning, right after the traditional breakfast, we got into the cab we ordered and headed towards Essaouira.

The almost 3-hour drive over dusty roads, through medieval-looking villages and the winding route over the high Atlas let the time pass as if in fast motion because we were literally glued to the windows of the car and could not get out of the amazement.

Before we reached Essaouira, however, we stopped at a women’s cooperative that produced argan oil by hand. We had never heard of this oil before but when we tasted it we were very surprised at this nutty mild flavor of the oil. After being taught in detail about the argan trees, the argan nuts and the benefits of the oil extracted from them, we continued our journey towards Essaouira.

Arrived in Essaouira, the “nephew” of the cab driver was already waiting for us at the parking lot to guide us through the city. So we followed it dutifully to the harbor.

I was immediately in love with shock when I saw the small blue fishing boats lying in the harbor basin and would have liked to stay there longer but our tour guide still had a whole package of sights on his schedule. So we continued to follow him through this breathtaking city and were led from one attraction to the next. When he was finally done with his tour, we gave him the completely overpriced fee he asked for (not without mentioning that we shouldn’t tell the uncle about it). We returned now first in a small fish restaurant directly at the port and enjoyed the peace and view and already there was clear that this would not be the last stay in Essaouira, but we decided in the fall to fly directly again to Marrakech to go then immediately to Essaouira.
