Essaouira

The city of Essaouira with its 88,000 inhabitants is located on the Moroccan Atlantic coast. Especially the 18th century old town and the Portuguese Fortress, which runs around the whole medina, are a big attraction for visitors.

Through one of the 3 city gates, Bab Sbâa, Bab Marrakech and Bab Doukkaladie, you enter directly into the historic center of the city. Here you will find many small stores, restaurants and of course the souk of Essaouira.

Founded in 1773 by the Portuguese with the name of Mogador, the medina has been on the list of Unesco World Heritage Sites since 2001.

Another sight is the fortress built by the Portuguese in the 18th century and the fortification wall with its striking towers.

The white and fine-grained sandy beach is also popular with tourists. Due to the trade winds, surfers and kitesurfers from all over the world cavort here.
